You are not going to like the answer to "What Is Sleep Apnea?", especially if you sufffer from this dangerous condition.

Good Heavens! What a weird word. One authority says it means "to breath". Another guru claims it means "without breath". Well, that is exactly what happens with sleep apnea, you stop breathing.

Sleep Apnea: The Causes

There are two types of sleep apnea: # Obstructive # Central When your muscles in your throat relax during sleep it can cause the airway in your throat that leads to you lungs to close or tighten. This prevents the lung from receiving any air. If your brain doesn't send a signal to wake you up, this could lead to death and you just never wake up.

When the brain screws up and doesn[t send signals to wake up, this is called central sleep apnea. You may wake up anyway, because you have stopped breathing. Most people with central sleep apnea can remember that they woke up during their sleep period. In some cases, the two types can be combined and this is called mixed sleep apnea. All types reqauire immediate medical attention.

Sleep apnea can cause additional complications, as every time a person stops breathing there is a decrease in the oxygen to the brain and body. This can result in problems within the cardiovascular system.

As we age sleep apnea is more prevalent in women than it is in men.

Symptoms Of Sleep Apnea

Individuals with sleep apnea are not getting a good night's sleep. They may wake up over 100 times every night and never be aware of it. One marker to remember for sleep apnea is very loud snoring.
