Jogging has been a popular pastime for 50 years. Heart rate monitors and other accessories help increase the benefits.

Jogging: Informed And Safe

Bill Bowerman, a track coach at the University of Oregon half a century ago, is credited with making the sport of jogging as popular as it is today. (Bowerman is also co-founder of the athletic apparel/equipment company Nike). On a trip to New Zealand in 1962, this legend in the sports world met with a fellow coach, one who had made jogging a very popular pastime in the island country near Australia. People by the dozens had started to jog with the New Zealand coach and Bowerman thought he might be able to bring some of that jogging enthusiasm back to the United States.

A Jogging Movement

A handful of men started jogging with Bowerman in Oregon and eventually several women joined the group (most wearing everyday clothes and street shoes). As the benefits of jogging became evident Bowerman combined his efforts with Dr. W.E. Harris, a cardiologist, to study just what jogging did for these men and women.

This fascinating combination of coach/cardiologist was at the roots of a now-major industry that includes accurate heart rate monitors and other accessories to help individuals get the most out of their jogging. Major companies manufacture heart rate monitors such as Cardiosport hrm, as well as measuring devices for speed, pace, miles etc.

In 1966, the two published a small book that attracted the attention of thousands. In the ensuing years, millions have taken up the pastime, some for enjoyment only, and others for the health benefits. Not only has Bowerman's drive and curiosity spawned a massive athletic shoe/apparel company, but the scientific interest generated by Dr. Harris was also the impetus for such companies as Cardiosport. Since 1976, this company has been at the forefront of the heart rate monitor field, with the Cardiosport hrm a standard in the industry.

Get Started

Of course, jogging is popular for several reasons, among which are health benefits and lack of expensive equipment. About all that is needed are a good pair of running shoes, some comfortable shorts and a loose-shirt. Most healthy adults will be fine with a little jogging, though everyone should check with their doctor first and then start slowly. Walking a few miles might be a good idea until the body is really ready for some "serious" jogging. Most people who start jogging have some problems doing it consistently, but once the habit is developed and set, this can be a remarkably beneficial pastime.
