Guided and Unguided Elk Hunting

Elk hunting is a great big game sport to consider if you want a hunting adventure. You get to hike in some beautiful backcountry and the feeling of accomplishment is one that will last a good long time. If you are able to indulge yourself in such an adventure, you will find you are getting some great exercise and, if you are fortunate enough to bring down a trophy bull, you get bragging rights, too. There is also the meat you can use for some mouthwatering dishes. Hiring a guide for an elk hunting trip might be something you are considering, so you will want to pay some attention to the following facts. Experienced hunters, as well as novices, employ guides for many very good reasons.

The first thing to consider is experience and location. How well do you know the area? If you have hunted in the area before or if you are very familiar with the type of country that you'll be going through, you may not need to be as reliant on a guide. However, as elk have a wide range throughout North America, there is a good chance that if you are elk hunting you might be doing in in a location you don't know very well. Are you familiar with hunting in a very wet location, or a drier one? How comfortable with you in the mountains as opposed to the deep forests? A guide can help you make up for any weakness you have when you are in new territory.

Do you work well with other people? Though the guide or outfitter may be hired by you, it is important to develop a working relationship. Can you step back and take the guide's direction? Will you let him do his job? If you can't, going it alone might be best for you to have a more pleasurable hunt. Some hunters become good hunter partners with their guides and if this is something you can do, having a guide will be very beneficial and make for a great hunting experience.

Consider, too, how long you want to spend hiking around in the woods. With an experience guide, you can have a successful end to your hunt much sooner than would likely be possible without one. Go without a guide and your hunt will most likely take much longer if you are in an area that you don't know. If you have plenty of time and are in no hurry at all, this may not be a problem for you. But if your time is limited, a guide can help you make the most of the time you have by taking you to where the elk are.

When it comes right down to it, you want your hunting experience to be as enjoyable as possible, so be sure this is uppermost in your mind. Hunting elk is a lot easier with an experienced guide.
