Generally in piano classes teacher guides the student to learn and play the music of the 'masters' with the schema book. And most of the student learn how to read and write music in a year or two and become perfect to play well. And they really find enjoyable and satisfy with it. These all process is to entertain themselves and others by playing really good music.
But it is the really nothing wrong with this approach. And along with this you have to express your emotion and feeling with your music, just like the painter do with their paintings. And there is a way and it works with the Chord - based approach to music.
It is exactly similar to the color of a painter. As combination of the color forms and technique help to create the painting of a painter. Similarly melody, rhythm and harmony are what the improvising composer to compose the music.
But worst part of it is that students rarely practice this art of using the chords well, especially when they become perfect in note reading and piano technique. A lot of dedication towards the creative and expressive in music is needed to become the master.
I don't know why this happens. But I am certainly sure of one thingby no chance does it need to be that way. For example by playing a few chords in a unique and particular way you can compose your own music or improvise on others music. My free lesson "Reflections in Water" teaches you just this.

I feel learn the piano is much like learning art. You first always start with the title of the piece you will be creating and then you create the piece using a step by step method. This method is what I use to teach my student and they just love it.
And in brief I would like to say that classical method of learning the piano is not the only way. And think in high manner and make your own music.
