the old century car
Kathy Austin
For more than a century since its inception in 1897 until 2004, Oldsmobile is still continually manufactured by General Motors. This could be considered as the oldest continuing vehicle in the world next to Daimler and Peugeot. This respected car ceased to be reproduced in 2004 with its last three models the Alero, the Silhouette, and the Bravada.
The three of them would take one a new dimension in terms of driving. It is like driving in the old fashioned streets considering its age. Of course, they still have that neat sculpted look and the preserved embellishments that is signature to these vehicles. This is specially customized to make the person driving it have a worthwhile experience.
Everything is there to be enjoyed; comfort, convenience, entertainment, safety and security. Road & Track extolled it for its "delightfully well-balanced and nimble character". Car and Driver called the Alero "downright world class". The same could be said of the other Oldsmobile cars also. The Silhouette brought in refined power while the Bravada had a explosive mix of raw horsepower.
With exception to Sillhouette, these are all powered by a 3400 SFI V6 Engine that can give a 185 hp at 5,200 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpml. The Alero and the Bravada are fitted with a 2.2 lt. DOHC engine with 140 hp. or a 3.4 lt. V6 with a full 170 hp and a 275 hp. Vortec 4200 DOHC incline 6 Cylinder engine respectively. One would expect them to deliver a very excellent performance.
Safety has been given prime importance in all the Oldsmobile cars. All of them come equipped with the mandatory safety equipment like air bags, both side and front. Anti-Lock Braking System is standard in all cars. The Alero and the Silhouette both feature the LATCH system for enhanced child protection. The Silhouette and the Alero come with additional safety measures such as Battery Run-Down Protection which automatically switches off the headlights after 10 mins., in case you forgot to switch it off, to name just one.
The feature laden Key-Less Entry is common in all three models. Its doors can be opened to a close of 30 m. It also has a panic button that can blow the horn and flash the parking lights when activated. For more visibility, al the models had a daytime running lamps.
A good feature of the three automobiles is the audio equipment that will make one's travel with lots of fun. The Silhouette even includes DVD player with wireless remote, a 6.8-inch video screen, on-screen programming and normal, wide, cinema, and zoom settings, stereo RCA jacks with inputs for video game systems and camcorders and 2 pairs of wireless headphones with separate volume controls.
The Oldsmobile Keychains come in an octet. They comprise of the Teardrop, the Steering Wheel, the Valet, the Chrome Circle, the Metal Oval, the Leather Gold, the Leather Silver and the Chrome Rectangle. The Chrome Rectangle is a novel addition, small and attractive. All of them have the distinct emblem of the car and its name blazoned on it.
