This is because it's an "emotional trigger" to push high numbers in front of the customers eyes. Another thing to look for is "credibility". If you do a search for this persons name, what do you find? Do they operate multiple sites, a blog and a newsletter? Do they have proof and testimonials on most or all of their sites? If so it's safe to say they are legit... most people can't run a long term business of fake terms.
If the site in addition to the previously mentioned points also has solid testimonials then it's easy to say it's legit. People have tried it and tested the product for maximum results. Are the testimonials credible? Are they normal people, experts or whatever? Whatever relates to you will be a solid testimonial... If they supply a webiste adress, image, audio, or video it's safe to say it's a legit testimonial.
Tip number 4: Overall Design
Websites that have really nice looking and professional imagery, design and overall look and feel is always an indicator of a solid website. The more professional "feel" you get over the site and the owner the more credible and easy it is to trust them. If they have audio, video and stuff like that to connect with you, they are almost always legit, because of the one on one connection they make, which makes it easy to believe they can easily connect with people in the same way in other markets. On the other hand, if the site is created by a 5 year old, you probably notice =)

This is a usual indicator of previous buyers and people who can vouch for solid information within. Things to look for are "reviews", "testimonials", "Success stories" etc using Google. If a person has 5-20+ reviews it's safe to say they are serious business owners who have gone great lenghts to find affiliate and JV partners.
