Everybody enjoys holidays, as it is great opportunity to recharge your batteries after long workdays. Here is a list of Romanian holidays, when people feel relaxed because they can take their time to do anything they want.

These holidays are legally declared free and they are different from the days of the weekend. However, there are public institutions, which have to work on these days too. They are sanitary institutions, alimentation units, organizations where production process cannot be interrupted, or police stations.

The Work Code in Romania specifies the following holidays at present. The 1st and 2nd of January are holidays on account of the New Year. Easter Holidays can be in either April or May depending on your religious requirement.

The 1st of May is observed as the International Workers' Day. Again, the 1st of December commemorates the unification of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania leading to the formation of modern Romania in 1918. It is celebrated as the National Day of Romania. The Christmas is celebrated with spirit on the 25th and 26th of December.

There are many other holidays, which are no less important in the Romanian calendar. 24th January marks the day of unification of Moldavia and Walachia. On that day in the year 1859, Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected as the ruler of both the counties. It is a very important day in the history of evolution of the nation state of Romania.

There are a few other holidays on the Romanian calendar that are celebrated with a great deal of merriment. Women's Day is observed on 8th March, and it is a time when women of all ages are pampered. Children wish their mothers and students their female teachers. Husbands shower gifts and flowers on their wives. Women usually celebrate by throwing parties for women only. Likewise, Children's Day is observed with festivities all over Romania on 1st June. Art competitions and sports contests for different age groups of children are a special feature of that day.

In Romania, heroes who fought in different armed conflicts are celebrated on Ascension Day and on June 1 it is celebrated Children's day. On this occasion children take part in different competitions, like drawing contests or sport competitions corresponding to their ages. The national flag's day is celebrated on the 26 of June. By the way, the colours of the Romanian flag are red, yellow and blue. Red stands for the blood spilled by heroes, yellow stands for the rich summer crops and blue stands for hope in a better destiny.

The 29th of June is observed as the National Anthem Day. The national anthem of Romania is a somber song written by a Romanian poet. Its title, "De steapta-te, romane!" means "Romanians, stand up for your Rights!". December 8th marks the Constitution Day, as the present constitution of Romania came into effect on that day in the year 1991.

Finally, there are two holidays, which are very special for the youth of the country. The first is known as Dragobetele and is like the Valentine's Day. No wonder it is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm in Romania. The second one is a very special day, observed on the 1st of March. On this date the male population of Romania, including its children, gives small lucky charms as gifts to their loved ones. Actually, the gifts are meant for girls and women only.
