The walls should be painted a shade which is unnoticeable in terms of arrangement & color. And the floors, if of similar color as the walls should be a shade darker, so as to outline its borders prominently. For it is the perfection of this relation of one color to another which completes the home beautification art.
The floor-covering, narrates to healthy housekeeping as a substitute of art. And one of the major elements of this art is that in all cases where carpets are being used, they should be in the form of rugs and not fixed in to uneven floor-spaces; so that there is no trouble of raising and cleaning. The great, and definitely the only, opposition to the use of carpeting in countryside or summer homes is the difficulty of frequent lifting, and removals of accumulated dust, which has strained through to the floor. But if mats are used, and are joined into squares which enfold the floor adequately, that surely is a perfect summer floor-covering, as it can be rolled and separated even more effortlessly than a carpet, and is a comfort for the house-keeper.
