7 Common Eyestrain Symptoms

Adrian Fletcher

Our eyes can feel the strain just like any other parts of the body when they are over used. For example, if you were chopping wood, you might start to sweat, your heart beat would rise and your arms and shoulders may start to ache. Without thinking you might decide to stop the work, take a cold drink and give the body some time to rest. However we take our sight for granted and use it all the waking hours. We don't consider that the eyes could get strained and often put up with symptoms of eyestrain that may be telling us to take a break. This article will cover the common symptoms of eyestrain and detail why the occur and how to remedy them.

Red eyes are an obvious sign that your eyes are tired. This may be a redness in the white part of the eye to give a bloodshot appearance or around the edge of the eyelids.

Watery eyes could also be a symptom of eyestrain. It might also be a response to dry eyes that is another common symptom of tiredness.

When you notice that it is harder to adjust your vision from one point to another then you may have strained your eyes. This is apparent when you have been looking at one object for a long time and then look at something in the distance. It will be noticeable that the eyes take longer to get the distant object into sharp focus, which is a clear sign of eye strain.

Becoming overly sensitive to the suns glare. You will find this occurring during the late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. Your ability to judge depth perception may worsen and you could get blurred vision. Again this is a sure symptom of eye strain.

More common signs may include swelling. The eyeball can feel awkward, like there is some grit in the eye, when moving in the socket. Burning is another common symptom that may cause you to shut your eyes or washing them with cold water. Headaches may also be a sign but this may be due to other reasons.

In any of these cases it might be another condition that is causing the problem. Thus follow some or all of these easy tips and you can help to relieve your tired eyes. Ensure that the eyes get a proper rest. Two simple examples spring to mind, get an adequate nights sleep and take constant breaks from staring at one object for a long time. If you think that your eyes are adequately rested but you still notice some of these common symptoms then it may be prudent to visit a doctor or optician.

The number one reason why people get eyestrain is through focusing on one point or object for too long. And in todays society that object is the computer screen. Common workplace and safety standards advice on working with computers suggests you should look away from the screen every 15-20 minutes.

Do this often so that it becomes a natural, unthinking habit rather than something that you have to remind yourself about all the time. Try to shift your gaze to an object in the distance, with different light quality, like out of the window for example. View this object for a few seconds allowing the eye to adjust adequately. Then focus on another object at a different range, do this for a few minutes before returning to the original task at hand.
