The Life of the Party: World of Warcraft Characters

World of Warcraft is a large, online multi-player role playing game. With warriors and mages, continents and weapons, it embodies the truest form of fantasy. Millions of players connect daily to explore the various environments, quest, form guilds and parties, collect weapons and armor and, above all, develop and fine-tune their characters. World of Warcraft characters are the heart and soul of the game; without these characters, there would be no point in playing. World of Warcraft characters are far more than avatars moving around the computer screen; they are, in a sense, the very virtual representations of the players themselves.

Playing the Part

A player has a lot to consider before he or she even begins the process of making a character. World of Warcraft characters have numerous characteristics and qualities that most be decided before they are even transported to the playing field. A player must first pick a class and a race; these qualities are often dependent on each other, as only certain races can be certain classes and vice versa. The player must also settle on statistics and choose a faction: the Horde or the Alliance, evil or good. Also, professions must be selected along with starting equipment. All World of Warcraft characters are given certain base statistics, equipment and money, but from the beginning, players have utter control over what they do with these initial gifts.

From here, the character becomes the player’s vessel; his or her character is the means through which he or she interacts with the environment, the artificial intelligence and other players. With World of Warcraft characters, players complete quests, buy weapons, fish, hunt, battle, heal, train, perform magic, practice riding and even yell, scream and get married. A player can essentially do anything he or she wants through his or her character; this is the definition of role playing, and World of Warcraft characters can play any roles.

Parting the Play

Non-player World of Warcraft characters are not controlled by players; they are controlled by the game. Players can interact with them, however, and they play an important role in game play. Non-player characters can include quest givers, trainers, guards and vendors. They will often have a talk bubble or a bag of money when a player moves his or her cursor over them, or a sword-shaped pointer when available for a fight. Hostile non-player World of Warcraft characters are often creatures or monsters referred to as mobs.
