Many of the newer handheld units are capable of connecting to the internet using proprietary software and Bluetooth communications technology. However, many of the older units may require the use of a modem. And while some laptops may also have the software enabling them to used for internet access, many still require the use of a phone, especially in areas that lack wireless internet connectivity area.
