Can You Home Brew Wine?

By: Glen Jackson

The Basics Of Home Brew Wine

There is something romantic about home brew wine, something that makes the home brewer daydream about being living in European monastery, surrounded by silence, crushing grapes, and sipping a freshly brewed glass of wine. There is nothing more magical then going into your basement on a rainy day and opening up a bottle of home brew wine that you created yourself. While the thought of creating their own home brew wine appeals to people, many wine aficionados shy away from the prospect feeling that they don’t have the time, knowledge, or money to make a quality product. The reality is that anyone can enjoy their very own home brew wine.

What You Don’t Need

You don’t need to have your own personal vineyard to make your own home brew wine. The average person doesn’t have the land to grow a variety of wine making grapes, much less the time or experience needed to select, grow and harvest them. Many people who make their own home brew wine, purchase the grapes they use from large wineries, who have the time, land, and knowledge to grow a high quality grape. Another thing you don’t have to worry about purchasing is a wine press. The wineries who sell the winemaking extract have already used their own winepress to extract every drop of juice from the grapes. Another good piece of information is that the only thing you will need your feet for is to walk from point A to point B; there won’t be any need to stomp on the grapes and stain your bare feet. If you feel like you simply can not brew a quality home brew wine without a wine press go ahead and get one. There are several available that will enhance your interior decorating.

What You Do Need

Before you will be able to make your own home brew wine you will need to purchase a wine making kit. A wine making kit consists of; a fermenting bucket (make sure it has a lid), a glass carboy with a stopper, an airlock, bottle brush, a triple scale hydrometer, and a siphon unit. Wine making kits are available in a variety of sizes and prices. Before you make a home brew wine you will need a recipe. Most winemaking kits come with a recipe book included. Look for a recipe that sounds delicious and looks like something a novice winemaker can handle.

Legalities

In the United States a single adult is legally allowed to make 100 gallons of home brew wine for their personal use. If you are considering making home brew wine to sell you will have to check with your local liquor board and learn about the conditions for wine sales in your region.
