Planning Your Next Vacation
Bill Speck
Vacation time is at a premium for many of us. Unfortunately, the luxury of an unlimited supply of vacation time and vacation money is not a reality. In order to make the most of precious vacation time, wise planning is necessary.
When planning a vacation the first thing that pops into many people's minds is "Where should we go?" This may be the most important decisions one will make in regards to a vacation. Don't know where to go? Do some research! The internet is a wonderful resource for vacation planning.
You can find information on where to stay, how to get there, what to do, and where to eat. Another resource for vacation planning is your local bookstore or library. You can spend an afternoon leafing through travel books, visualizing yourself in a glamorous location.
In addition, ask family, friends, and co-workers for ideas for a vacation. It is generally helpful to get first hand knowledge of a locale from somebody who has been there. They can lead you down the right path and point out things you should avoid. When planning your destination you should be mindful of a few things. First, who will be going on this trip? Will it be you and a significant other? Will you be going with children or parents? Will it be a large group or a small group?
When you know who is going on the trip, you then have to regard the likes and dislikes of all of the travelers. For example, it might not be sensible to plan a rugged wilderness journey for a group that has teenagers who would rather spend their time at a mall. Not only would they not have a good time, but you have a good chance of making yourself miserable. Similarly, it might not be the best idea to plan a sailing trip if your group includes someone who is prone to sea sickness.
When you have decided who you will be going with and what their likes and dislikes are you can move on to fixing a budget. Budget planning might not put you in a vacation mind set but it is a crucial part of vacation planning. Of course, if you are rich and have more money than you know what to do with, you can pass over this part of the article. Unfortunately, many of us cannot assert to be rich and therefore must set a budget if we want to take a vacation.
While setting a budget for a vacation you must consider several factors. First, how much money do you have to spend? This may determine your destination. You may have dreams of a villa in Tuscany but your budget might only allow for a cabin at a state park. Be realistic when setting your budget. Not only should you budget for lodging and transportation, but also for food, gas, entrance fees to attractions, and souvenirs. Many people may wonder just how much to budget for such things. Once your lodging and transportation is covered a good rule of thumb is to allot $100 per person per day. This should cover most expenses.
Your choice of destination will ultimately determine how much you should allot for daily expenses. If you plan to be a beach bum for a week and stay in a condo where you can cook many of your own meals you will need less money than if you were to plan a whirlwind trip to Europe.
In a nutshell, take some time to plan and research and you can have a great time on your vacation.
