Aspergers Syndrome Defined
Coach Hamilton
Aspergers Syndrome (AS) affects approximately 36 out of every 10,000 boys and girls. It is a highly complex developmental disorder that affects both, male and female children, with males being more common.
Children with this condition are normal to above average when it comes to intelligence. They also have no or few speech problems. Children with (AS) show difficulties in three main areas:
Social abilities - Communication skills - Behavioral characteristics
Because (AS) is hard to diagnose unless you are looking for it, it will be mistaken for Attention Deficit Disorder or other behavioral conditions in some children. Many children go undiagnosed completely.
Some common problems children with (AS) are found to have include, but are not limited to:
Tic Disorders, like Tourette's - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Oppositional Defiant Disorder - Depression - Bipolar Disorder - Generalized Anxiety Disorder - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
While Aspergers Syndrome is part of a family known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders, many English speaking countries also know (AS) as Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
Although this condition was identified more than 60 years ago, there is still no single known cause of this disorder or cure for it. It is, however, known to be linked to genetics so if someone in your family has the disorder, it is more likely to be passed on.
