Top 5 Causes Of Snoring
Thomas Wilson
There are several things that can cause snoring and in order to stop it you need to determine exactly what is causing it.
There are 5 common causes for snoring...
Drinking Alcohol
If you often drink alcohol before going to bed, a way to see if it could be related to your snoring is to not drink any for two or three nights. See if your snoring improves or goes away entirely.
Alcohol is a depressant, which causes the muscles in your neck and throat to relax while you sleep (more than they normally would). When these muscles relax, it can cause your airway to become restricted, which in turn lead to snoring.
If you find that your snoring is better or even gone completely when you don't drink, the obvious solution is to stop drinking. If that isn't possible for some reason, at the very least keep your last drink to at least 4 hours before going to bed.
Sleeping On Your Back
Many snorers only have a problem when they're sleeping on their back. The solution to this is to train your body to sleep on your side.
There are lots of elaborate devices that can help with this but there is a simple homemade remedy that anyone can use.
Put a tennis ball inside a sock, which you then pin to the back of your pajamas. While you're sleeping, if you roll onto your back the discomfort from the tennis ball will cause you to roll back onto your side.
Are You Overweight?
Excess weight can lead to snoring. When you're overweight, you can get fatty tissue in your neck and throat area which can put a strain on your airway and restrict your breathing. In this case, the obvious solution is to lose some of the extra weight.
Do You Use Antihistamines or Sleeping Pills?
These products can have a similar effect to alcohol. They relax your throat muscles more than normal sleep would and this can lead to snoring problems.
Do You Suffer from Allergies?
Allergies can result in nasal congestion. This can make it difficult for your body to get the necessary oxygen.
The trouble here is that antihistamines are often used to treat allergies, which can just compound the problem. You're best to take a decongestant rather than an antihistamine to help clear your head.
Whether any of these causes of snoring hit home for you or not, you should speak with a doctor or another health care professional and get their informed opinion about your particular situation.
