Id theft is an offense that has grown to be very common nowadays. It is when someone uses your personal information sans permission to facilitate crime or fraud. ID thieves steal this personal information to allow them to proceed with their illegal activities whilst protecting their real identity. They put at stake the reputation and identity of the real owner of the stolen identity. Espionage, terrorism, illegal immigration and blackmailing are some of the illegal activities related to ID theft. This crime is indeed very common and what makes it scarier is the fact that it has given birth to more than one classification including financial, criminal and commercial or business identity theft, and also identity cloning.

ID Theft Precautions

1. It is purely common sense but is such an important reminder to make sure that all paper documents should be thrown out in the garbage in a very secure manner. This way important and confidential personal information contained in these documents won't serve as a temptation for Id thieves.

2. It is essential that you should be defensive when someone asks for your personal information like details about your Social Security Number. Ensure that you are reminded of the privacy policy of any company asking for this information and that they are honest enough not to share your information with anybody else.

3. Never carry important documents and ID's unless you need to use it. Losing these essential documents and identification cards makes you an easy target for Id theft.

4. Before paying your credit card bill, check if all the purchases listed are the actual merchandise and services that you have used. Another thing to remember is to keep track of the date of your credit card or bank statements delivery.

An id theft victim should first contact the three major credit bureaus to report the matter and request a fraud alert on his/her account, followed by a police report regarding the ID theft activity. Remember to keep a copy of the police report.

You should be responsible enough to be careful with your personal information, though following these rules may not be a full assurance that you will never be a victim of identity theft. However, observing these precautions are an ideal practice to help avoid your personal records being messed up.
