Choosing the best mattress cleaner greatly depends on how dirty the mattress is or how "critical" is the stain in the mattress. Also, choosing a mattress cleaner will depend on the kind of materials the mattress is made of and the linen that covers it.

Meanwhile, it should be taken into consideration that cleaning a mattress is not an easy thing to do. Aside from it is difficult to carry and move around these heavy pound mattresses, a mattress is an expensive home commodity. A single mistake in cleaning it will lead as far as buying a new mattress. Therefore, it is very necessary, to carefully study the contents of a mattress cleaner before applying it to your mattress.

The following are some examples of mattress cleaners relative to the degree of stain or dirt of the mattress:

- One mattress cleaner that is found to be effective is the mixture of mild detergent powder and warm water. Add one cup of water to a bowl filled with a quarter cup of the mild detergent powder. Mix the two ingredients using an egg beater or electric blender so that suds will form. Blend until the suds are thick and foamy. Using a sponge, dab a small amount of suds to the stained area in the mattress. Continue to do so until the stain will disappear. Just make sure not to wet other parts of the mattress or "over dab" the sponge to the stain so as to prevent the froth to wet through the mattress. Always see to it that the mattress is dry before returning back its covers. You can use a hair blower to dry the damp area.

- For heavier stains, you can use Hydrogen peroxide as another form of cleaner. Accordingly, blood stain is one of the most difficult stains to rid of and it really takes patience to make it disappear. Mattresses with blood stains can be treated using a hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is an unstable liquid that can be used as a bleach or disinfectant.

To clean using hydrogen peroxide, simply dab a clean white clothe with enough of the solution and pat on the stain. Start from the outer layer of the stain going towards its center. Continue to do so until the blood stain will be removed. It should be made aware of that hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics; therefore, it is only proper to be cautious in applying it into the mattress. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used in removing stains brought by urine.

- The white vinegar can also be used for blood, urine, and other forms of heavy stains in the mattress. As a mattress cleaner, some people find it to be very effective in getting rid of unwanted stains.

- Another cleaning product that can play the role of a mattress cleaner is the upholstery liquid cleaner (or also known as upholstery shampoo). Just spot a certain amount of upholstery shampoo using a clean cloth/sponge to the affected area. This can remove stains and bad odors brought by urine and other liquid spills. It is advisable to keep dry the mattress after cleaning it by drying it under the heat of the sun. This will not only clear the mattress from bad odor, it can also disinfect the mattress from dust mites and germs that have clung to the mattress.
