Give Mom Her Space
Dr. Noel Swanson
Every person needs some space, which really means they need time to be alone. Just as there is a world outside that occupies you day and night, there is an inner world that cries for your attention. You need to look at your feelings and moods and you need to sort out some thoughts and pursue some ideas. All this you cannot do running around at a frantic pace. So, it is natural for everyone to want a few moments alone.
In a marriage, dads usually don't comprehend mom's need to be alone. But, it is time to come to terms with it and allow some space to mom who takes a whole lot on her shoulders without making much fuss about it.
Many men don't realize what is really involved in being a mother. They assume that all that time at home during the day taking care of the house, and all the things that includes, are the same thing as having some time alone. They have no idea of the reality, and why alone time is something every woman needs.
If you are a wife trying to explain this to your other half, remind them, nicely of course, about their time golfing or fishing; and how good that time away from the daily pressures of life feels. Get them to admit how recharged they feel after these outings.
Discuss with them how happy they feel when remembering the fun they had while participating in these events. It is sure to be a positive experience. And once they realize this, tell them how you feel. Tell them that the good feelings that they are having about their outings is exactly what you want to feel. Perhaps this will help them to understand your desire for alone time.
Women have been taking these inequalities for too long. It is time they asserted themselves and demanded equal opportunities not only for work but also for relaxation. All it needs is to express your feelings and sooner or later you will be understood even though men, by nature, are averse to disturbing the status quo.
Equality must begin from home. First women must ask for equal rights at home and then they won't have to fight too hard to get equal rights at the workplace. Despite all the hue and cry about woman's liberation women still don't get equal pay, even though more women hold higher positions of power than ever before, and men respect and work with them without hesitation.
However times must change. You must work to help make him understand your views otherwise he may never fully understand your needs.
