He helped Dudley to take the business to a higher level, and when Dudley died a year after their partnership was formed, Johnston became the owner and changed the name to the James Johnston Company. A few years later, however, Johnston partnered with William Murphy, an entrepreneur who wanted to make the shoe company known around the United States. Soon Johnston & Murphy shoes were being worn by all prominent citizens in the United States.
