Johnston and Murphy was started in 1850 when William J. Dudley immigrated to the United States. He began creating shoes out of his Newark, New Jersey home. He eventually had to hire workers to help him meet the demand that his numerous customers were putting on him.
About thirty years later, Dudley found that he needed capital in order to make his business larger. He teamed up with James Johnston, who had plenty of money and believed in Dudley's product. He helped Dudley to take the business to a higher level, and when Dudley died a year after their partnership was formed, Johnston became the owner and changed the name to the James Johnston Company. A few years later, however, Johnston partnered with William Murphy, an entrepreneur who wanted to make the shoe company known around the United States. Soon Johnston & Murphy shoes were being worn by all prominent citizens in the United States.

Today, Johnston and Murphy shoes are made with the same high quality materials that they were made with years ago.
