Make Your Own Works Of Art

Andrea Elliston

Do your walls need livening up but you don't know what to do?

All you need are a few ideas and you will be creating your own wall decor in no time.

I love ideas that don't cost much time or money and this one certainly fits the bill.

All you need are:

* One box canvas for each piece of art you are going to make. They don't need to be top quality as they won't be seen.

* Enough fabric - either new or used but clean - to cover the canvas(es).

* One of my favorite craft tools - a staple gun.

The fabric needs to be completely crease free so iron or press it now if you need to. You will need to cut your fabric to be the size of the front of the canvas plus extra to cover the sides and an inch or two more. With your fabric good side down on a table, simply place the canvas in the center of the fabric. This should be good side down too.

You will need to pull the fabric up the side of the canvas and staple it at the back. The corners are probably best done as if you are wrapping a present rather than bunching up the fabric as you will want the canvas to hang flat against the wall. It doesn't matter if the back isn't neat as it won't be seen.

The most important thing is that the fabric is pulled tightly so there are no wrinkles or bagging visible on the front of your 'work of art'.

You can do this on your own but a third hand might be useful as it is not easy to pull tightly and staple at the same time - especially if working with a large canvas, so ask someone to help you.

If you have made drapes or cushions for a room, this is a nice way to use the excess fabric as the only cost is a cheap fabric and the end result is a very co-ordinated look. it also works well with upholstery fabrics as you can achieve a look like a tapestry - the corners can be a bit tricky though with a very thick fabric.

If you buy a bed-in-a-bag set you may find you have excess pieces and this idea works well in a bedroom when something - an unwanted pillow sham for example - is used to create a stylish look. This is particularly good if you have something that is the opposite color-way of the main fabric of your bed cover rather than exactly the same.
