If you find yourself hard of hearing, do not fear. Millions of people suffer from some type of hearing loss. Hearing aids are now better than ever but choosing one can be a little overwhelming.

Here are 5 things to consider when deciding on which digital hearing aids to purchase.

1. Digital Hearing Aid Style

Hearing aids are available in a number of different styles. The suitability of a hearing aid style is dependent on the type and level of hearing loss. You should talk to a hearing professional who can determine which hearing aid suits you best.

There are 5 main styles of hearing aid:

CIC - Completely in the ear canal hearing aid fits deep into the ear canal and is not visible. These are super-small devices. One drawback is that the tiny size prohibits many features. ITC - In the canal hearing aid fits partially into the ear canal although not as deep as the CIC style. ITE - In the ear hearing aid fits into the outer edge of the ear. While this style may be more visible it is also easier to handle and insert. BTE - Behind the ear hearing aid attaches to the outer ear and rests on the back of the ear. It is making a revival partially because of its similar shape to cell phone headsets and the style lends itself to improved hearing. Open fit hearing aid is similar to BTE hearing aid but smaller. It uses a small tube to send sound into the ear canal.

2. Basic Features

All of the hearing aids do exactly the same job, they improve a person's hearing. This means that they have the same basic components. A microphone captures the sound, which is then passed into the amplifier to make the sound louder. The speaker is then used to play the sound back so that it can be heard. All hearing aids are powered by batteries. The more advanced models may need more frequent battery changes.

3. Digital versus Analog

Analog was the first available version of hearing aid. Digital hearing aids were invented following technology advancement. Digital hearing aids were once fairly expensive but now their prices have fallen. Analog hearing aids are becoming obsolete due to the superior sound quality being offered by digital models.

4. Accessories

There are a number of different options and accessories that come with a hearing aid. A remote control enables you to adjust the volume easily. Adapters allows you to use your hearing aid with your cell phone and telephone.

5. Digital Hearing Aid Brands

There are many different digital hearing aid brands, it's always a good idea to stick to reliable and well known brands. Try and choose a brand which offers a guarantee. Siemens, Rexton and Phonak are some popular hearing aid brands to consider. Make sure you compare brands and prices to find a digital hearing aid that meets your needs and budget.
