Most people--no matter the gender, the age group or the social strata to which they belong to-- possess at least one cell phone. And if you are like most people then you probably have ring tones for your cell phone. And if you are so tuned in to the latest in cell phone technology then you most probably have different ring tones for specific groups in your cell phone address book.
There is nothing new about a telephone ringing. The old phones we had to lease from the monopoly phone company back in the day, also made a sound when someone called. However, with current cell phones you can choose what sound you want to hear when a certain person calls you.
The popularity of ring tones for cell phones can be attributed to a very practical purpose which is to determine whose cell phone is ringing. Imagine being in the company of other cell phone users and having the same ring tones. That would probably result to a mad scramble with each one trying to determine whether it is his cell phone that is ringing or not.

Ring tones have adapted to the advance in cell phone technology. If you have a relatively new cell phone you will be able to play anything from customized ring tones to composer ring tones where you can hear a baby crying or animal sounds. This is a far cry from ring tones of the past that were monophonic (the simplest sounds) in nature.
But whatever ring tone you choose for your cell phone or for specific people in your address book, remember that ring tones are supposed to be helpful devices to make callers easily identifiable and to make it easy for users to identify whose phone is ringing. If the situation calls for it, it may be ideal to choose the best alternative to any ring tone: the vibrating alert.
