There is so much hype about now days relating to the dream of working from home and running a home business. This usually involves setting up a website of their own and providing affiliate links for selling other peoples products for commission.
Of course I sell products on the internet through affiliated marketing sites, but I am very aware that there are many scams and quacks trying to convince people to participate in their marketing trickery. Most marketing scams will be lucky to survive for ten months in the market, but not all these organized programs are dodgy.
Some are merely misguided, and more are simply mismatches with the people who buy them. Here's the real secret to running an internet based business, selling services or products:
Sell your dream, not someone else's. There is probably something you know, or something you can do, that people will spend money for. All the internet is, and all pay per click advertising does, is help you put a product out there for people to find.
Now, unless you're a great salesman (and let's be honest, most people aren't), you're not going to be as passionate about selling someone else's pre-packaged kit (which, well, there are hundreds of other web sites, just like yours) as you will about selling your own products and your own skills. You know what you can do better than anyone else, and you know what inspires your passion to greatness.
If you knit, sell knitting patterns. If you do carpentry or woodworking, sell videos of your techniques or how-to guides. If you see a commodity that you can get cheap (like, say, old satellite dishes), find a way to sell it online with an online store to people in areas in underserved markets. Whatever you do, do something that you understand, that you believe in, and that focuses on the things that you add to the proposition to make it happen.
Understand that if you have a need, and have found a way to solve it, other people probably have that exact same need. If you can find them, or they can find you (and Pay Per Click advertising will LET them find you), then you can sell them that same solution and make a decent income. Will it make you financially secure, pulling down hundreds of thousands of dollars per month? Probably not, but it can give you a job where you only have to work for someone as smart as yourself, can work the hours you want, and can never be fired, doing the things that make you happy.
When your job centers around something you like doing, you will feel a satisfaction about helping others who are like you. In this way, you win twice through making money and enjoying yourself while you are doing it.
