Avoid Copywriting Mistakes, And Increase Sales

Ray Edwards

There are three simple mistakes that are made by copywriters. Since the goal of direct-response copywriters is to get as many sales and opt-ins as possible, these mistakes should be avoided.

You can instantly increase your opt-ins or sales or actions, by correcting these three specific mistakes.

Today's resource comes from my own site. You can download free copywriting videos by visiting this site: www.WebCopyWritingExplained.com

What are the three mistakes to watch out for? I'm not talking about grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, though you need to watch for them, too. These are errors in your basic approach, and they can have a major impact on your results.

The three mistakes are:

Not writing to the reader. Robert Collier, a direct-response genius, tells writers that they must join a conversation with the reader, one that is already going on in the reader's mind. You don't have to become a mind-reader. Just get to know your audience - what they want, need, and desire. Use words that echo their thoughts and emotions. That is the only way to get their attention. In his book Breakthrough Advertising, Eugene Schwartz says, "You cannot, with your copy, create desire. You can only channel desire that already exists."

Writing copy that sounds like well, like copy. Many copywriters have been guilty of this at one time or another. We see some great copy, and we are inspired! We try to follow the same look and feel on our next bit of copy, even though the products are nothing alike. You must write to your reader. Don't write copy for other copywriters to admire - that can kill your promotion!

Not Taking the Time to Know Their Product. When Eugene Schwartz wrote a promotion for a book, he read the book. Not oncebut three or four times! He would have 60 pages or more of notes before writing the sales copy. Many copywriters I encounter today are writing copy for a product they've never used or never read even once. This is a terrible mistake. It is a horrible disservice to your client as well as to your readers. Get to know your product intimately. You'll get better copy and, as a result, better sales.
