Determining the cause of a constant headache can be a little more challenging and a thorough medical history and examination may be required. If the pain is located in one area of the head, it could be a sign of a neurological disorder or an indication of problems with the blood vessels in the brain.

There are some medications that cause blood vessels to expand or contract that can have an immediate effect, causing constant headache pain until the medication is discontinued. In some cases, the headache will last only a few minutes or a few days until the body recovers from the change. In others, the constant headache could last for many days or even months and is considered a side effect of the medication.

Many Headaches May Be Intermittent

The definition of constant headache may vary between healthcare providers and does not translate into a headache pain that is ever present. For some patients, they may suffer a headache at close to the same time every day, considered as a constant headache by many physicians. In order to find relief, they will have to retrace the steps of their daily activities to learn what is triggering this painful response.

For example, a person that suffers a headache everyday when they get home from work, may be experiencing a stress headache caused by the commute, or the thought of the responsibilities they will face when they enter get home. By understanding what causes the constant headache pain, they can take steps to eliminate the problem.

Those suffering neurological disorders or circulation problems may require more invasive actions in order to eliminate the constant headache. In severe cases, the physician will refer them to a neurologist for effective treatment in order to put an end to their constant headache pain. Those suffering from the continual pain should see a doctor or healthcare specialist that can help put an end to their constant headaches.
