Many people that are part of the baby boomer era have already reached retirement and another group of us are planning to make this dramatic life change. There are many things to consider when retiring so planning and discussing with each other as well professionals becomes part of our last few years of work. My husband and I have quite an age span between us. I am nine years younger than he is. He is talking about retiring in three years and I am hoping that I can retire early in about nine years. We have made investments and also have good pension plans from various jobs that we have held. I left public employment after twenty years, so I will be able to draw that pension while I am still working my present job. Once I am at this job for ten years I can begin drawing a pension from them. We are thinking that we will be having about the same amount of income when we retire as we have now.
With the income portion of our retirement worked out we have started considering what we want for a retirement home. We are in a multi level home now so we know that we are going to relocate so we do not have to negotiate steps as we get older. We have already started looking at some retirement homes because our present home is paid for. Now we have three bedrooms, all with queen size mattresses and dressers in them. We also have a den that is used as our home office as well as a sewing and craft room for me. The home that we are looking at purchasing has a master bedroom, which is big enough for the queen size mattresses that we have now. There are also two smaller bedrooms. One is bigger than the other and I think the queen size mattresses would fit in, but the third bedroom is too small. We agree that we want to keep at least two of the queen size mattresses because it is more comfortable for quest to have a queen size bed. This is the most common size bed that people purchase.
We are debating about what to do with the small guest room. It would be nice to have it as an office space so that the home computer as well as my sewing machine could be in it, however that does limit the number of guest we can accommodates at one time. My daughter suggested buying either an over sized chair or love seat that would fold out to a twin or full size bed. We could have this as a reading area in the office and if needed a guest could sleep in there. This seems like a great solution and this is what we are going to do. It seems odd to have our retirement plans made, but it is exciting to be planning for the next stage of our lives.
