A Pop Up Tent Is A Great Idea

By: Casey Howard

Have you ever gone along with something that you really did not want to do just to make another person happy? I have. When I was first engaged my fianc? wanted to go camping and canoeing in a wilderness area. I did not mind camping, in fact I had done a great deal of camping while I was in college; however the backpacking and canoe portaging that went along with the wilderness trip did not sound like much fun to me. I agreed to go on the trip; however I refused to do this for our honeymoon. I was not going to be carrying around a canoe and taken baths in a stream for my honeymoon. He agreed that we could go someplace nice for the honeymoon, and then he booked our trip to the wilderness area for the month before the wedding.

With the wilderness area the only thing you have at the campsite is what you carry in. The year we went the streams and rivers were at a decent level so there was not going to be a need for many portages. We would be able to load the canoes with quite a few provisions. My fianc? told me he would take charge of the gear. I was expecting a huge pack to carry. I was pleasantly surprised when he handed me a small pack and also a roll. He told me the roll contained the pop up tents so I should make sure to keep them dry. The roll was very light. I thought the pop up tents must be very small. We loaded up and started paddling our way to our first campsite. We were in the boundary waters canoe area of northern Minnesota. We went before the huge storm that hit that felled so many trees. We canoed to the first site we had reserved. Our plan was to make a large circle. We would canoe to a campsite and spend the night we would then canoe deeper into the area and spend our second night at a different camp and then we would canoe to a third sight that would be located a short hike to the vehicle. The canoeing was easy as we were going with the current and we did not have a wind. We saw several eagles and a black bear. When we arrived at the first camping site we gathered food to make a fire and then went for a quick swim to cool off and clean up. When I unrolled the pop up tents I was surprised how quick it was to set them up. Basically you take them out of their bags and the literally pop up into a dome shaped tent. This was much easier than trying to put up a tent with the traditional poles and stakes. By the end of our three days I was sorry to see the time end. I have gone back to the wilderness area many times since. I am so glad that my husband introduced me to this type of camping.
