It was not too long ago when people mostly ignored polar bears. Despite the fact that the polar bear has always been a beautiful creature, it is not very impressive to most casual environmental enthusiasts. For most people, there have always been much more convenient bears to see, and many of them are just as big and majestic. Nevertheless, times are changing. Nowadays, polar bear tours, souvenirs, and artifacts are more popular than ever. There are thousands upon thousands of people who collect soapstone bears carved by Inuit artists, and movies about the lives of penguins, polar bears, and other inhabitants of the hyperboreal realms are making waves in the mainstream. It all comes down to one thing: global warming.
You see, the polar bears are in trouble, and the consumers are starting to respond. I have run a polar bear tour operation for years, but it has never been so popular as today. Back in the day, the only people who really wanted to see Arctic wildlife tours were serious hippies or environmentalists. Everyone else would go on something more temperate and laid-back. After all, if you want to go on an Arctic wilderness tour, you have to be willing to make some sacrifices. You have to be willing to go without a lot of warmth and explore some of the most dangerous and frozen territory on earth. I’m not saying that tours toys are dangerous, because they aren’t . I have never had a serious incident in all my years. Nevertheless, they are more risky than, say, a Caribbean cruise or a spring vacation in Cancun.
Still, when I see families that wouldn’t have gone to the far north to see polar bears a decade ago, I am glad that I got into this line of work. I never did it to make a lot of money,. I simply wanted to share my love of the polar bear with people. It seems like it is catching on. Every tour, we sell T-shirts, statues, books about conservation, and other artifacts. We have even begun to work as an agent for a polar bear conservation group. We take donations and pass them on. By getting people out there to see the plight of endangered animals, we can do more to protect them. We can get people excited about making a difference in endangered species conservation, all while making sure that they have a good time on their vacations.
