License Plate Covers Are A Good Idea

   By: Rae Goodman

People and their vehicles! Most of us love our cars, trucks, SUVs and mini-vans. Okay, maybe not so much the mini-vans, but definitely the others. We take pride in our rides because they cost us a pretty penny, and many believe they reveal a part of us. For this reason, we trick them out and dress them up. We take them to the car wash and have them waxed regularly. The last thing we want is for their paint to lose its luster. And then there are the folks who really go all out with detailing, custom exhaust systems and license plate covers. This is great and all, but do you realize what you're getting into?

I had this buddy back in high school. We were best friends from the third grade on. This guy LOVED cars. Sports cars to be more precise. He ended up working his tail off to purchase a like-new 1994 Mazda RX-7. For those who don't recall what this vehicle looks like, it was the one Vin Diesel was driving in "The Fast and the Furious." Pretty sweet ride, if I do say so myself. My friend decked this car out as best he could. He added a carbon fiber hood, custom racing seats, fancy exhaust system, spoiler and a few other interior additions. It looked outstanding. Better than the one in the movie. Needless to say, this car was his baby, and man was it ever fast. Soon enough he had personalized plates made and purchased license plate covers to top it off. Now, this was a mistake as far as I'm concerned. Although I do realize that it's fun and exciting to supe-up vehicles, especially when you're a teenage boy, but you have to remember when doing so, you're singling yourself out big time. Anyway, one night my buddy was out speeding down the interstate. Suddenly a cop approached with lights flashing. At this point, he got a little ridiculous and tried to ditch the police officer by taking an exit. On the bright side it worked, but on the downside, he was later pulled over by another officer who had received a description of his car. The officer told him it was easy to find with the unique detailing and customized plates.

There's nothing wrong with custom license plates or license plate covers. Just remember that "TA-DOW" written across your license plate is very conspicuous and distinct. Any trooper or officer will remember that. So before you run out and buy license plate covers or fancy detailing, remember the cop issue.
