Have you ever heard the saying that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks? I have heard it often and never paid much attention to it. Now that I am getting older and have had to learn how to use a computer to keep up with my job I have greater appreciation for the concept that the saying was implying. I have always been quite quick to pick up on new concepts. I learn things quickly, however I felt like the information services staff were speaking a different language when they were explaining different aspects of the computer program I was to record my case notes on.
A year and half ago my husband and I took the big plunge and bought a home computer. Neither one of us knew anything about computers other than the information we entered as part of our job. We also had email at work so we knew the basics about it. We had our system set up and purchased internet access. For the first time I was exposed to the ability to surf the internet without the rules and restrictions placed on by my employer.
I was fascinated by the number of my relatives and friends that had their own websites. These were people that did not have any more computer training than I had. I decided that it would be fun to have a page to direct people to with updates on our family. I learned how to create a web page by following the simple directions on-line from a web hosting company. I had no idea that there was such a thing as a web host or creating a web domain or any of those things until I started looking into our own page. The great thing was that the entire process took less than an hour. In that time I learned how to create a web page registered my domain name and began adding to the site.
My husband was out of town the day I started playing around with this. I knew he would be surprised that I had figured out how to create a web page for our personal use. I posted information on how each member of our family was doing. I scanned some of the pictures from our recent vacation. I then emailed our friends and family members with the address for our site. I was quite proud of this accomplishment. I told my husband that I felt like an old dog that had just learned how to shake hands.
