Garage door openers are definitely something I did not think about before I had a kid, but now that I have one, they have become important. Unfortunately, I did not think about my garage door opener until my child was hurt. Nowadays, I have a lift master garage, but I had some rickety old model before. It was not safe, and it did not work properly. I was always fighting with it.
Half the time, the garage door opener would not even work. I would push it, and nothing would happen. It was very frustrating to say the least, but I did not realize that it was also dangerous. Then one day, disaster almost struck. You see, my little boy ran under while the garage was closing. With more sophisticated garage door openers, there are safety features built-in. With many of the newest garage doors, they will not even close if something or someone is in the way. The garage doors one generation before that, would stop moving if they felt something under them.
This garage door, however, was broken. When I clicked the garage door openers, they did nothing. He got a substantial clunk on the head, and I had to take him to the hospital. He was not bleeding seriously, but he was in pain and had been traumatized by the experience. To make it even worse, the garage door openers would not work after that. I had to actually get out of the car and open the garage door by hand every single time. I blame myself sometimes, and tell myself that I should have looked at the openers garage door before hand. I should have checked to make sure that such vital pieces of household equipment as garage door openers were safe before I trusted them to take care of my family.
In reality, however, I just do not think about it and that was that. Some types of accidents are difficult to foresee. I am just glad that it wasn’t a worse catastrophe. I have heard of small children actually being crushed when garage door openers failed. None of these families intended for anything to go wrong, and many of them were very cautious and caring people. Nevertheless, sometimes accidents happen. All I can do as a parents is hope that the accidents are not tragic when they do happen. This time, my son was fortunate enough to get away with minor scrapes. I can tell you this much ? I will never use outdated garage door openers again!
