A Desk Lamp Is A Necessity If You Work At Night

By: Nicky Patterson

Sooner or later, office lighting is always an issue in a workspace. From the floor lamp at your home office to the fluorescent lighting in your place of work, having the right light fixtures can make a huge difference in your productivity and comfort. For my part, I have spent a lot of time looking for the perfect desk lamp in the past. I used to have a simple executive desk lamp, and I liked the light that provided, but it was a little bit old and battered. When I decided to replace it, I wanted to make a change. I figure that it was an excellent time to redecorate my home office, so I bought a new desktop toy and a desk lamp that was different from the one I had always used. The desk toy was pretty straightforward ?One of those doodads with the clanking balls. The desk light was also somewhat classic. After thinking about it carefully, I opted for a Tiffany desk lamp.

In my home workspace, things are easy. Because I only have to light one room, I don’t have to worry too much about lighting costs. I don’t have to buy high-efficiency halogen light bulbs. I can use standard incandescent ones which, although they use a lot more energy, also provide a warmer light source.

At the office, however, it is a different story. Every one of the desk lamps has to be fitted with a high-efficiency fluorescent light bulb. They instituted this as a part of cost-cutting policy. I have to admit that it works. We saved 50% on our electric bill since we started using high-efficiency lighting. There are drawbacks to it, however. Your typical fluorescent light gives everything a dead look. Fluorescent lighting is fine in the bathroom, But if the space where you work every day is lit like that, it can get kind of depressing.

Fortunately, there is a solution. Whether you are using a desk lamp or an overhead light, you can get broad spectrum lighting halogen bulbs nowadays. This is a great improvement over the way traditional fluorescent lights work. Broad-spectrum light bulbs, as the name implies, produce much of the full spectrum of visible light. To the human eye, this makes things look brighter, warmer, and more cheerful, as well as increasing visibility. This might not seem like a big difference, but if you spend hour after hour under the same lamps, you will notice the change.
