Borderline Diabetes May Be Cured

By: Jamie Preston

Diagnosed With Borderline Diabetes ? What Now?

Many people think that this is just a warning against the possibility of developing diabetes, which will disappear with time and maybe some precautions. There are two schools of thought on borderline diabetes ? one says that this could be the beginning of diabetes but might not develop into the full fledged disease if all precautions would be exercised; the other school of thought says that this is diabetes though in a very mild form.

Other Names Of Borderline Diabetes

More and more people from the medical fraternity are wiling to go with the second school of thought. Accordingly what is diagnosed as borderline diabetes should be explained in detail and termed correctly so the person knows what exactly is the problem and what to expect in the future as complications.

There are three types of borderline diabetes manifestations - insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes. The symptoms for all the three are the same, i.e. fasting blood sugar level of 100-125 mg/dl and 140-199 mg/dl reading for glucose as result of the oral glucose tolerance test.

When you suffer from insulin resistance your body would not be able to respond normally to the insulin produced which would result in overproduction of this substance. In most cases the insulin intolerance can be cured; however, this could result into problems such as clogged arteries, hypertension and loss of HDL (or the good cholesterol) from the blood.

The impaired glucose tolerance very often is the outcome of insulin resistance. When the body increases the production of insulin, it puts a lot of stress on the pancreas which in time decrease in its productivity. When this happens, the person would develop all symptoms of full blown diabetes ? while actually they have impaired glucose tolerance.

The last form of borderline diabetes is the beginning of diabetes type 2. There are two possible reasons for the rise of blood sugar in this case ? (i) the insulin produced is not enough or (ii) the body cells are rejecting it.

The Steps You Need To Take

The doctor would advice you how to fight this problem. Some of the steps you would need to take immediately would be, (i) adopting a healthy meal plan, (ii) undergoing a weight-loss program in case you are grossly overweight, (iii) starting a simple but regular exercise regime, and (iv) keeping a close tab on the oscillation of your blood sugar.

Remember, you have not yet developed into full blown diabetes though you are just at the border ? maybe this is how it has got its name ? and this borderline is very thin. Only following the correct program would prevent you from turning into a diabetic, so be careful.
