You should care precisely because of what Facebook is: the #1 social activity website in cyberspace and the impetus for Web 3.0 (above Web 2.0) and the semantic web. Only three and a half years old, Facebook has witnessed a sudden explosion in popularity - with the computer biz's biggest players all vying for a piece of the action.
The big three internet companies - Google, Yahoo! and big mama Microsoft - were alleged to have had an all-out bidding war to buy just a small stake of Facebook's big success. The one who got the win was Microsoft - coughing up and incredible two hundred and forty million dollars for only 1.6 percent of the company. That purchase knocked up the value of the site's parent company up to a total of fifteen billion!
What was behind paying that big a price for so little a share? The answer lies with the vast majority of Facebook's users, who are the next generation of computer users. Microsoft does not want to lose its claim on them - especially with Google's relentless marketing maneuvers over the past few years dominating the online field. So the company that Bill Gates built has no choice but to show Facebook the money.

A new advertising system is also reported to be in Facebook's future, because, according to Facebook chief revenue officer Owen Van Natta, "We were very fortunate to have a lot of folks interested in a partnership with us around advertising."
Why is all the massive marketing buzz suddenly swirling around Facebook? Well, when your numbers show a 50 million active member base, with a growth rate of 200,000 new users a day, that tends to get internet marketers' attention.
