Thoughts On the Purchase of a Color Copier
Larry Brooks
If you are considering getting a color copier, the time is perfect. All of the new color copiers are loaded with new features and lower pricing.
Do you have to go to the local copy shop for copies all the time? Think of the convenience and time saving associated with having your own color copier.
If you are replacing a machine or buying for the first time, there are a few things to consider. Modern copiers are now multifunction document handling systems. Do you want to purchase a new or a used machine? Please be aware that some older copiers may be analog and will require more maintenance than the newer digital copiers. Most digital copiers are capable of being used as a printer, a scanner and some as a fax machine.
The number of copies you will run in a month is your copy volume. This is an important factor when buying a color or b/w copier. If the copier is to slow, you will waste a lot of time waiting for the run to finish. But the faster the machine the more it costs. So it is wise to discuss with your sales rep.
Almost all of the mid to high volume copiers can be networked. When networked the copier will act as a high speed printer with features such as duplexing, sorting, stapling and choosing paper size.
You may find that the savings from switching laser printers to a color copier may offset the cost of the copier.
Will you need a service contract? If you choose one of the smaller units, some of them are designed to be serviced by the purchaser. Then you don't really need a contract. For the larger units that only allow you to replace a toner cartridge, a contract is probably in order. Be sure to research this depth.
So here are a few other things you might look into.
* Try to tell the sales rep all your requirements.
* Have you worked out a budget for this?
* Leasing is another path to obtaining a color copier.
* If you need black and white and color copies? How many?
* Are you looking for a multifunction machine (printing, scanning, faxing, etc) or just a copier?
When you purchase a color copier, the more research you do the better your chance of buying just exactly what you need.
