Spyware and How To Guard Against It
Frank Thomas
If your computer has ever started acting in strange ways by popping up advertising windows or taking you to places that you never intended to visit then there's a good chance that your computer has been infected by adware or spyware. If you are experiencing that now there's probably no way to immediately know whether you have a minor problem or a major problem. What we do know is that you have to deal with the problem quickly.
When we talk about spyware we are referring to programs that unscrupulous people sneak on to your computer. When you think you are getting a free screensaver for your computer, for instance, there could be spyware hidden in the installation process. When you are not sure of the source of the free items that you download off of the Internet it is best to not download them at all. Spyware on your computer can be extremely frustrating at a minimum but carried to the extreme it can be dangerous to your financial health.
If you have not yet experienced any of these symptoms listed above yet please do not be complacent about the problem. A recent study indicates that close to 90% of computers that wind up in repair shops are suffering from the presence of secret adware programs. In most cases there were actually a dozen or more spyware programs operating on the person's computer without their knowledge.
Spyware can be a minor irritation or a major problem. When the problems are minor you may not experience anything other than your computer running slower than what you are used to enjoying. When they are major problems they can actually shut down your computer when the software does not function as the designer had originally intended. And, there's no one for you to complain to either.
One of the frequent ways that we first become aware of spyware in our computer is, for instance, when we go to our favorite search engine and type in a search phrase then suddenly to our surprise one or more ads may pop up in separate windows advertising products that have something in common with the search phrase that we have just entered into the search engine. This is a sure tip-off that your computer is infected with at least one spyware program.
Another danger from spyware is that it may contain what are referred to as Trojans. Trojans are programs that load themselves onto your computer and are not only aware of everything that you are typing into your computer but also have the ability to change the operation of your computer itself. For instance, they are sometimes considered to be practical jokes and people install them on someone else's computer and then at various times the Trojan will open and close the CD drawer of the computer or pop funny pictures up on the screen at random. Unfortunately, they can also be used by strangers to spy on everything that you do.
In a worst-case situation Trojans and spyware can be easily used to steal your identity. Passwords to your checking account and credit cards suddenly become easily assessable. People that would honestly describe themselves as incapable of doing you physical harm for some reason think it is perfectly okay to steal your money and your identity.
You do not have to be defenseless against spyware and it's terrible consequences. At the very minimum consider installing a free program from Microsoft called Internet Defender which does an adequate job of protecting your computer. Or the other hand, considering the cost of your computer being invaded it often makes a lot of sense to spend $30 or $40 on commercial software designed to protect you from spyware. These programs are highly effective against not only protecting your computer from new spyware but the commercial applications also search your hard drive and remove any and all spyware programs that already exist there. Whatever you do just do something and do it quick.
