The Siamese cat is believed to have its origin in Siam, Thailand. This is an ancient domestic breed with its ancestry traced back to an albino cat given to the king of Siam as a gift. In Thai legends, the Siamese cats were the protectors of the royal castles and temples from evil spirits. The Siamese people also believe that when a person of high rank died, the dead person's soul would linger on in the cat for a certain period. The Siamese cat first appeared in the West in the mid 1800s.
The Siamese cat can be the traditional or the modern Siamese version. The body is long and slim and the tail is kinked. It has a long neck and bright blue eyes shaped like almonds. The original cat is called the apple head Siamese because of its round head. On the other hand, the modern Siamese cat has a head that is elongated. Their ears are larger and features more pronounced.
The original Siamese has a round face and is much more muscular than that of a modern Siamese. This breed is shorthaired with a base coat which is cream in color and the face, ears, tail and legs are dark in color. The body color can be either white or fawn with the Siamese markings. When a Siamese cat is first born, they are cream in color, the markings then develop over the next few months. The markings on a Siamese cat can be found on the paws, ears, tail, muzzle and lower legs.
It is a very demanding and attention seeking breed of cat. The mentality of this breed is very much similar to that of a dog. The Siamese cat is very affectionate, energetic, intelligent, inquisitive and people orientated. It is a breed which is the most vocal and talkative from any other. The Siamese cat constantly talks, and can be very annoying when it is on heat. It is then that the cat will become very loud and sound like a wild lion.
If a Siamese cat feels that it is not getting the attentions, it becomes extremely jealous and throws tantrums. A Siamese cat does not like being ignored, it needs attention constantly. The traditional Siamese cat has a temperament that is more laid back than the modern Siamese cat.
The Siamese cat is bored quickly. It is essential to have toys and an area for it to play and exercise. It needs to scratch and sharpen its claws to be healthy. A cat gym or cat tree with a scratching post would be most essential. Regular brushing is necessary in order to keep its coat in good condition.
The Siamese cat matures early in its life, as young as five months old. This is a very fertile breed; the litter size is on average six. It is essential to have your Siamese cat vaccinated before you allow it to go outside. If you wish to feed fruit or greens to your Siamese cat, then that they must be boiled first. If you are going to take your pet for a walk outdoors then you must use a harness and a leash to prevent it from taking off .
The Siamese cat still remains to be one of the most popular shorthaired cats in the world. It is a cat which is only really suitable for those people that can give it lots of love and attention. It is not a pet for such people that do not like a great deal of noise, as this breed does tend to be noisy on a constant basis. The Siamese cat can however, be your best friend and a loyal companion due to its affection. Minimal maintenance is needed for this breed due to it being shorthaired. It is important to remember however, that the traditional Siamese cat does make a better pet for the entire family, as it has a much quieter personality than that of the modern Siamese.
