Older Siblings And Santa
J Gardener
Watching little children during the holiday season is always a joy. Their excitement as they await Santa's visit is infectious, and helping Santa Claus make their Christmas special is always a lot of fun. Many families have the added challenge, though, of having older kids, as well, teens who've grown beyond the more mythical parts of the season.
Every family's little children spend months looking forward to that famous sleigh-ride that Santa takes, each year, barely able to contain their excitement as Christmas Eve draws ever closer, along with the promise of all the best toys and goodies under the tree on Christmas morning.
Older kids, especially teenagers, may have lost that twinkle, when it comes to the holidays. They tend to pride themselves on the fact that they've outgrown the need for myths about fat men, sliding down the chimney and snarfing up the milk and cookies that Mom and Dad leave on the mantle.
Parents can find themselves in the middle, when it comes to dealing with the holidays. It can be difficult to meet the needs of both sets of kids. While Mom and Dad may want to preserve the joy and the mystery that Santa and his legend bring to Christmas for their younger kids, they also know that their older children are influential models to the littler siblings.
Older siblings can help moms and dads with their younger brothers and sisters, during the holiday season. It wasn't so long ago that these teens were anxiously awaiting Santa, too. Reminding them of those special feelings, and how wonderful that anticipation felt, is a way of enlisting older kids as Santa's helpers. If they realize that part of adulthood, at Christmastime, is preserving the magic of the season, they'll be much more accomodating to their younger siblings' needs.
Eventually, the younger kids will outgrow many of the holiday season's traditional aspects, including Santa Claus and his reindeer. But they'll be grateful for the memories they have of Christmas past with their family, and the efforts of the whole family to make the season special and magical.
