Model Trains: A Not So Obvious Part of Student Life
Mike Mathew
Did you know that model trains have a connection to architecture? I discovered that connection 10 years ago, when helping my son, then a high school sophomore. I also discovered that model trains can bring joy to a mother whose son has recently received a California drivers' learner's permit.
At that time, I had not had an opportunity to go online and search for information about model trains. I had not viewed the train cars put out by Bachman model trains. At that time my son was the principle user of the one personal computer in our home.
Giving a lot of consideration to a career in architecture, my son had chosen a course in drafting, in high school. Designing or building model railroads had not even come into his line of focus yet. All his energies were concentrated on designing the structures and buildings that could be built along the track of an actual railroad.
What type of buildings can look appropriate beside a railroad? A quick glance at the suggestions offered by the company named Power bring us across the items like a pickle factory model, a brewery model or a fire department model. Power specializes in manufacturing and supplying premium model train accessories to numerous operators dealing in model trains.
If you still want more types of accessories, you can find some like a model switch tower and a model engine house sold by The Atlas Company. In fact, you can also get a model pedestrian overpass as well there. I figure some of these accessories would have been up for sale a decade ago, when I went to a model train store.
I wasn't in that store to make purchases for the model trains. Instead, I wanted to pick up few model train accessories. I wasn't scouting for a gas tank model, a farmhouse or an overpass for pedestrians, but I was searching few model trees.
My enthusiasm must have been misunderstood by the clerk at the store, as one displayed by a hobbyist with an interest in building or repairing model railroads. This miscalculated judgment of the clerk who looked onto me as a genuine model train customer became apparent when he expressed his interest to assist me.
I pleasantly informed the clerk about my wish to buy a few model trees to be utilized in my sons' architecture project. My son was quite keen to dabble around with such options to make his draft look appealing.
The clerk directed me to a particular hobby store in the nearby Los Angeles and the moment he brought up that stores' name, I knew where exactly I was heading. I had bought a few other supplies for my son from the same store some time ago. As my son was already shaping into an expert driver, I let him drive down to that store with few directional advises from my end.
I wasn't convinced though if that particular store would be stocking the model trees we were looking for. I had visited that store earlier to purchase a wooden mini-racing car when my son was in a troop for Boy Scouts. He had a challenge up his sleeves to build a model car and race it against the other Boy Scouts. I will not be surprised to see some of those competing boy scouts too indulging actively in model trains today.
