Most mlm companies like Melaleuca would have their distributors believe that they're not in the "sales" business. Since most people cringe at the very thought of selling, these companies sugarcoat the idea for them by saying, "It's not selling, it's sharing!" They make it sound like child's play, you know a cakewalk, something so simple and easy that anyone can do it. This type of thinking has a couple very harsh consequences for mlm distributors.
Melaleuca product distributors aren't taught to sell and Melaleuca Inc. is taking a dangerous road when they teach the "sharing" concept because it gives distributors a false belief that they are doing the right things to promote their business. The bottom line is that distributors are not trained totally for success! They are equipped with inferior sales methods and left to fend for themselves trying to pitch their products and opportunity.
The "sharing" concept sets Melaleuca business owners up for failure. Owners are made to think that selling is a piece of cake and that it's simple and easy to do. They're made to think that anyone can sell if it's sharing and all they need to do is put a little excitement in their approach. When they actually get out there and attempt to "share" with family and friends, they find that they actually get met with rejection, disappointment and even feelings of bewilderment. So what happened? They did everything they were taught to do and it didn't work!
Why is it that the Melaleuca Company (like many other MLM companies) avoids telling distributors the truth about selling? Why do they continue to say that selling is easy because it's sharing? The "sharing" concept was meant to ease people into doing something that they didn't know they wanted to do or even could do. If Melaleuca distributors really knew that they had to sell, sadly, many of them would probably not be involved in the business. What's worse is many distributors never even realize that being in network marketing means being in sales!
If you want to make this business work for you, you'll need to understand one thing. Selling is not the same thing as sharing. The two are not related or equal. Sharing is what kids do. Your upline might have told you something that makes the sharing concept plausible like, "Word of mouth is the best form of advertising there is." While that is true, word of mouth advertising works for those who don't have a financial interest in the product or service being discussed. If you, as the business owner, talk about your products, then that's automatically selling because you're biased. A prospect's guard goes up and then you have to fight against that.
Learn effective sales skills. If you want to really be a success in your Melaleuca home based business, it means learning proper sales skills. You're going to find out who your customer is, what they're looking for, and then you're going to put together a plan of action to attract those kinds of prospects. You're going to be people focused and not product focused. The reality is that nobody cares what you have unless they see a real value in the product or opportunity for themselves. These are the first steps to becoming a success in Melaleuca, the wellness company.
Here's the sales process. Find out what your customer's needs are first and then provide a solution (with the solution being your product or Melaleuca opportunity). Many distributors have this process backwards. They start by trying to introduce the product first without ever really finding out if a prospect even needs it or is looking for it. How many times have you poured over product specs reading ingredients and health benefits? Knowing that information is great, but it does you no good if your prospect has no need for the product? The main idea here is to stop placing an emphasis on the product and start placing an emphasis on determining your customer's needs. Once you do that, you will find that your business will begin to solidly grow as the people who are in it want the products and even better want the opportunity that you provide.
