Kitty Chromosomes And Gender
Paulina Jenkins
The study of kitty chromosomes shows that all female cats possess two X chromosomes. On the other hand the males have the X and Y patterns. The mother passes the X chromosome on to her kittens, and the father gives either the X or Y chromosome. How these two kitty chromosomes are combined will determine the gender of the kitten.
In all cats there found to be 19 pairs of kitty chromosomes. One set is inherited from the mother; the other set is from the father. These kitty chromosomes determine the sex of the offspring and can be either X or Y chromosomes.
For a cat to be a calico or tortoiseshell it must possess two X kitty chromosomes. The X chromosome has the gene for the fur colors of orange and black. The Y chromosome contains the gene that is responsible for the gender of the kittens. It also regulates the male cat's sexual development and genes. The Y chromosome has no fur color gene.
The X chromosome, when paired with another X chromosome, will produce a Calico coat. This chromosome contains the gene that determines orange and black fur. The Y chromosome is what determines the sex of the kitten and controls its sexual development in a male kitten. It does not hold any gene for determining the color of the fur.
This is where it may get a little confusing; in order for a male cat to have a Calico coat, it has to have two X chromosomes and one Y. Female cat have to have two X chromosomes to have a Calico coat. A cat with a Calico coat has an extra gene that creates the white part of the color.
In order for a cat to have a Calico coat, it must have the two fur color genes. These X chromosomes that the mother cat gives to the kitten. If the kitten somehow gets two X and a Y chromosome, it will be born sterile and the kitten will always be male.
