As the air turns crisp and the days grow short, we know that the Christmas season is approaching, and with it, the excitement of the holidays. The ornaments, the songs, the parties and church services all remind us of the joy we've always felt at this holiday time of the year. And, for the children, the promise of Santa Claus's visit always dominates this wonderful season.

Most parents are happy to enlist as Santa's helpers during the holiday season. The only people who enjoy Christmas morning as much as little children are their parents. Watching a child see the presents under the tree, for the first time on Christmas morning is one of the most wonderful sights for any parent. A few weeks later, though, when the bills arrive, many moms and dads wish that Santa hadn't been quite so generous.

Many Christmas shoppers, and especially parents, hit the shopping bricks, each year, without doing enough delving. Though most parents know by Thanksgiving exactly what their kids want Santa to bring them, a lot of parents head to the stores without knowing where to find the best prices. As a result they may buy the sought-for item at the first store they come to, when they could buy it for less, down the street.

The internet can be an alternative way of finding the perfect toys. Sometimes, leading up to Christmas, retail stores run special internet sales on popular toys and games. The advantage to internet purchasing can be in saving on sales tax, but consumers will pay for shipping, in most cases. It's also a good idea to make sure you're buying something that the retailer actually has in stock, and can ship promptly.

Parents should never leave the house to shop without a written list of what they plan to buy. Then, while shopping, they should account for everything they spend, beyond keeping receipts. A running acccount of everything that is purchased on a single shopping trip can be a deterrent to overspending.

One of the most important ways parents can avoid overspending at Christmas is to avoid the temptation of the last-minute shopping run, to pick up a few more little things or stocking-stuffers. When all of the major gifts have been bought, there's really no need to buy kids little extras. They'll probably just wind up under the bed or in the garbage, before January.

Parents should make Christmas as wonderful as they can, without succumbing to the constant pressure they feel to overindulge. Breaking the bank in December won't make you or your kids happier, in the long run. The main thing you'll remember about Christmas, anyway is the love you and your family share, and you can't pay for that.
