Is Your Poker Game Missing These Nuggets of Gold?
Henri Junttila
There are some things that make good poker players. Those things are often not what you think. Often you might think that poker players have an inside secret or a holy grail that make them awesome.
This couldn't be further from the truth. Poker is something you have to learn and put time into to become good. Anyone can do it, but it takes time.
Time is a huge part of learning anything. As you know! There are no quick fixes when it comes to becoming an expert poker player.
It can sound un-doable if you try to see all the steps you need to take. But focus on one step at a time. Think about what you can do right now. Buy a book, join a forum or get a coach? Remember to keep it fun and you'll learn faster and won't get frustrated. When you become serious you take the fun out of it.
I've compiled a small list for you which is very concise and goes through the most important concepts you need to focus on while learning poker. Here it is!
1. Strategy - You might say that strategy is the most important thing in poker. How to play hands and be able to do things like bluff, value-bet and fold in proper spots. Although I think strategy is crucial, I do not think it can stand on its own. The next point illustrates why.
2. Discipline - If you know everything about strategy, but fail to quit when you play bad or have awareness of you weaknesses then you aren't going to win in poker. It is that simple. You need to start honing your discipline right from the start!
3. Managing Your Money - You have to manage your poker bankroll so you do not go broke. If you don't have money you can't play. You are your own boss. I use the rule of 30 buy-ins for each level I play. If I play $1,000 NL I want $30,000 minimum. And this is because I am a winning poker player since 2004. If you are a novice and learning then you should have a lot more. You should begin at micro-stakes where you can afford to lose a lot without caring. Have fun and learn first.
4. Game Selection - You need to select good games to play in! There is no reason to play in a game where you are a loser when you can play in a game where you are a winner. Pretty logical, huh? :) I see many professional players play day in and out with other professionals, all because they are too lazy to select good games.
And that's that! If you are interested in becoming an even better poker player then you can visit my poker website. I go through all these poker concepts in more detailed manner.
Have fun!
