Hunting For The Big Buck
Stephen Long
It was Friday, the day before the deer hunting season opener. We arrived at the deer hunting shack a day or two early to scout around to see where the deer had been moving. I crossed a bay in a small lake, to take a look a dirt road. The deer usually came down to the bay in the lake to drink or cross into an area where my tree stand was located. It didn't take me long to find a fresh deer track, which was the biggest one I had ever seen. The deer track measured over 4 inches long with dewclaws behind it and was spread out. All of this were signs pointing to a very heavy buck. I was getting excited and was looking forward to the possibility of seeing him tommorow morning when the season was open.
After a fitful nights sleep I had great anticipation as I left the deer shack at the crack of dawn. As the sun came up I discovered 2 inches of fresh snow with not a breath of wind. It was cold about 10 degrees or so. It was very still and quiet in the woods. The deer hunting conditions were perfect!
After a few hours I decided that I needed a coffee break. A few minutes went by and I could sense a presence of something behind me. As the steam from my hot coffee drifted up in the air a big doe was starring right at me, or at least I thought. The Doe probably never had seen hot coffee before was staring at the steam. The big doe filled with curiosity crawled on her knees to ckeck it out. Not having a doe permit, I watched as she slowly walked away.
I saw another deer out of the corner of my eye that was moving along a ridge. The deer was moving along from right to left and if continued its' pathe I would have a clear broadside shot. Fortunately I had cut some shooting lanes a couple of years back and the deer was walking in the lane! My first sight of the deer was a big buck with a doe along side of it. It seemed like it was forever before I could take a shot. I fired my rifle and the big buck fell hard. After I got down from my deer stand I called my hunting buddies. All of us agreed that it was the largest buck that any of us had ever seen. It just had to be the big deer that made the tracks from the night before.
It took a while to field dress the monster buck and with 4 guys it was a struggle to drag it back to camp. We broke camp a few days later with 3 deer from our hunting trip. When we went to the station to register the deer, the owner of the station wanted to weigh my deer. He too said it was the biggest buck that he had ever seen.
The deer was a 10-point buck and dressed out after hanging at 235 pounds. The rack still hangs on my wall and all I have to do is look at that big rack and smile as the deer hunting memory comes alive again!
