Breaking News on the prevention of Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia suggests that our diet will play a key role in preventing these debilitating diseaseas. A recent study shows that people who ate lots of omega-3 rich foods reduced their chances of developing their disease by about 60%. This follows a recent report where carrots and other beta-carotene foods were found to also reduce the chances of developing dementia.

The American Academy of Neurology published the report which detailed a study over several years based on 8,000 men and women. All the subjects of the research were 65 years or over. They found that those who consumed more Omega-6 foods such as sunflower oil and other oils used in the preparation of food were at greater risk of developing these diseases.

Let us not forget that omega -6 is an essential Fatty Acid (EFA) and therefore essential for our well being. Most people on a typical Western diet consume far more omega-6-rich foods - especially American and Israeli diets. Researchers have discovered that the so-called omega-6 to omega-3 ratio should be about 1/5 for optimal health.

The Omega-3 foods which are recommended are oily fish such as tuna, mackerel, salmon and the humble sardines. Other foods you can go for are cod-liver oil and walnuts. As regards fish, we should be eating at least two 4 ounce servings a week, according to The American Dietetic Association.

The Omega-6 foods which do not enjoy a good press should be consumed in lesser quantities. We need to invert the trend and eat less of Omega-6 foods which are sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, egg yolks, red meat and margarine. It may be time to change your salad dressing if it contains some of these oils.

Another report shows the maternal link in this disease plays an important role even if it is not fully understood why. Those whose mothers have or had Alzheimers are at greater risk off developing the disease than those whose fathers have had it.

Research results on a possible vaccine for Alzheimers are promising. The vaccine could well prevent or slow down its progress. Testing on humans will not start until 2010 so it is still very early to chant victory. The vaccine, if successful, will stimulate the immune system so that the brain can fight dementia more efficiently.

Which diet has the correct balance between Omega -3 and Omega -6 foods ? It is the Mediterranean Diet which has been studied the world over as an ideal healthy diet. you will find lots of whole grains, fish, olive oil, garlic and tons of fruit and vegetables. Meat is consumed in small quantities. This could be the way forward in defeating debilitating mental diseases in old age.
