Dental Fear and Tips on Dealing with it
Jim Gatton
Are you afraid to go to the dentist? Do you have trouble sleeping last few days before your appointment? Are you up all night the night before a dental appointment? Do you feel as though you will vomit just thinking about the dentist working in your mouth? That is truly a horrible way to have to live.
Does it help to know that you are not alone in your fear? The unfortunate reality is that most people really are afraid to go to the dentist. The key difference here is the degree of fear that people experience either prior to their dental appointment, or in the waiting room, or in the dentist's chair. Some degree of fear is to be expected. The problem arises when the fear is excessive.
Quite often additional knowledge will help you to control the fear or at least minimize its effect in your life. It is an old clich but it is also true that you need to know your enemy. And once you know your enemy, whether the enemy is real or imagined, it is much easier to deal with that particular enemy. One of the things that you need to do is learn a lot about dentistry, what they do for you, and how and why they do different things for you.
And other tip for you in dealing with your fear of dentistry is to once again trying to deal with it logically. Yes, it is very true that sometimes logic does not help at all in dealing with your rational fear but your fear of dentistry is not an irrational fear. It is rooted in some fact and truth. Since it is a rational fear it quite often can be dealt with logically. It will help many people and I hope you as well to dwell on the negative consequences of not going to the dentist for regular checkups and then obtaining what ever dental work is recommended for you the logical about this. Remember that sooner or later you will be in the dentist chair. Better on your terms then because of an emergency pain relief procedure.
Something else for you to consider is calling your dentist and setting an appointment to just come into the office and get to know him a little bit better as a person. He really does understand that you want to conquer your fear and he will help. Yes, in most cases the dentist will charge you for his time but it will be well worth it if it helps you gain control of your fear of dentistry.
Another thing for you to consider is to take a friend or family member with you to your appointments. There truly is strength in numbers and it really does help to have someone encourage you and keep you calm. Both strength and comfort of friendship helps us to get through many things including our fear of going to the dentist. You might even consider taking this one step further and asking permission from the dentist to have your friend come back in the examination room with you while the dentist works when your teeth. Again, this is a fairly regular procedure.
The most important things that you can do is to use one or all of these tips or rack your brain to come up with some additional ways to deal with your fear of dentistry. The most important thing to do is simply to do something. Do not just run from your fear of dentistry but instead attack it as you would any other problem in your life. If you try to ignore it will not go away but if you realize that all you have to do to improve your quality of life is to learn to control your fear so that you are in charge you will be much better off. You have heard this before in other circumstances and it is true of again here that you need to just do something. Anything. Just do something not to make your fear go all the way but just to learn how to manage it.
Remember that what we are talking about is you improving your overall quality of life. It is not necessary for you to defeat fear entirely it is only necessary that you learn to manage or control your fear once you do this and start going to the dentist on a regular basis and taking care of all of your needed dental work your quality of life will improve dramatically.
