Children's Holiday Crafts

It's the time of year when we haul those boxes down from the attic, or up from the basement, or out of the garage, and pull out those Christmas ornaments and decorations that have been tucked away for the past eleven months. We collect these things, over the years, either buying them ourselves, or receiving them as gifts. Though certain ornaments or decorations may have had sentimental attachment, at one time, after a few years we put them up on the mantle or hang them from the tree, with little thought of their original meaning.

When those decorations are hauled out, for the first time, each year, no one is happier to see them than the children in the family. Decorating the home for Christmas is one job that most kids are delighted to help with. In fact, many adults wouldn't even bother decorating, if their kids didn't spur them on.

Why not let your children be a real, fundamental part of the Christmas decorating, every year? In place of some of the knick-knacks, whose origins have been lost to memory, holiday decorations crafted by the children in the family can become truly important pieces of a family's Christmas celebration for years to come, perhaps even for generations.

There are many different ways that children can craft holiday decorations for the family home. Even pre-school children can join in, helping with simple projects. On the internet are hundreds of childrens craft resources which will help you get started, with easy instructions and complete lists of necessary ingredients and tools.

Crafting unique ornaments, using paper or clay, or from many easily available household items, is an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Working together to create something beautiful can bring about a strong sense of accomplishment to a young child, and making Christmas decorations early in the season will give children a wonderful sense of family belonging and fellowship, as friends and extended family gather and admire the new holiday adornments.

Creating homemade decorations is also the kind of activity that makes a perfect focus for a children's Christmas party, early in the season. Children can gather at one home and make new holiday ornaments for their own individual homes, or they can work together to create decorations to donate to others, who may not have decorations at the holidays, like hospital or nursing home patients.

Christmas is a time that brings out the best in children. Let your kids feel as though they've helped your family, this year, by creating and putting up their own creations. Years from now, when you open those decoration boxes in early December, you'll all have a wonderful time, remembering exactly where all those wonderful ornaments came from, and when they were made.
