Best Bang For the Buck Computer Upgrades- Memory
David Smith
Perhaps you've heard that upgrading your memory is important. Or maybe you've heard about upgrading the processor, motherboard, or graphics card. There are many upgrades that are possible for most computers, it's just a matter of getting the best bang for the buck.
Not only is installing more memory pretty cheap, most people can get it done for between $50-200. But, it's also the most effective as well. It can improve your entire computing experience. From browsing the web, to doing multi-tasking, having more than one computer program running. It's especially important in families where the computer is used by different users. As that can be very memory intensive.
In today's computing world, you need at a very minimum 512MB of memory, and if you're going to be using Windows Vista, you'd be better served with at least 1GB of memory. While you'll find high-end systems with 2-4GB or more of memory.
The problem is not all computers are made equally. You can't just run down to your neighborhood computer store, and buy any old memory and expect that you're going to be able to get it to work with your computer.
Laptops in particular are especially unforgiving of the memory that can be installed. There are different speed variations of memory, different sizes (laptops use different size than desktops). Generally you can consult with your manufacturer of your computer, or your documentation to find out what type of memory chip you need.
But, even that's not enough. It's important to know that there is space in the PC for the extra memory. Each computer can have from 1 to 4 or more slots for memory. Once you match the memory to the computer, now you have to verify that there is room for the extra memory. For instance if you have two memory slots, and the computer came with 512MB of memory, but it has no slots available. If you needed to get 1GB of memory, you could either buy two 512MB slots and replace what's already in there, or you could buy one 1GB stick, and replace one of them giving you a grand total of 1GB + 256MB. Complicated I know, but necessary so that you don't waste your money.
There are numerous websites that give detailed requirements of many of the computers and the memory requirements of each. Most of them are provided by the leading memory manufacturers like Crucial, and are very good resources. .
Dollar for dollar, buck for buck upgrading the computer memory is the most efficient upgrade path for most computers. And rather than going out and buying a new computer every few years, a good defrag and an increase in memory is often enough to do the trick.
