Cats are given all kinds of supernatural powers by their owners. This probably derives from the fact your kitten senses the world differently than you or I do. Ah, but how do they differ and can we consider them an enhancement?
Cats are oh so cute, but there is a definite dark side to your little fur ball. This dark side also explains how its senses have evolved over time. Simply put, your kitten is a predator. Its senses are all tailored to help it catch its prey.
Vision is the first and foremost sense for your predatory fur ball. Simply put, it has excellent night vision to support its ability to hunt mice, rodents and elephants at night. During the day, that same vision is a hinderance as their vision is worse than ours.
Cats have long been associated with the devil because of their red satan eyes that show up in pictures. The truth, however, is the red you see is a reflection off a part of their eye that concentrates light so that they can see better at night.
You might be surprised when it comes to hearing of a kitten. One would think it would be significantly better than us lowly humans. It is for higher pitches, but mid to lower pitches finds the cat hearing about as well as us.
Once area where there is no disputing our feline friends have superior senses is smell. We might as well not have noses when discussing any comparison. A cat can smell 14 times as well as we can.
What about the sense of touch? Well, cats have whiskers for a reason. Everyone has seen those on the face, but your cat actually also has them under the chin, on the back of each ankle and on the inner wrist area.
What if you could see things with parts of your body other than your eyes? Well, this is what is believe to happen with cats and whiskers. Studies of brain activity show cats process whisker info like vision from their eyes.
Imagine if you couldn't taste sugar. No chocolate. No candy. No fruit. Well, this is more or less the situation with cats when it comes to a sense of taste. They have serious trouble processing sugars, so they tend to stick to meat.
As you can see, your cat not only thinks it is smarter than you, but it definitely has enhanced senses. Whether that leads to greater intelligence is hard to say, but it certainly food for thought. Just not sugary food.
