Christmas Lights Can Really Create A Great Atmosphere

By: Dylan Wilson

Christmas Lights Create A Holiday Celebration

One of the most beautiful images during the Christmas holiday is the many Christmas light displays that line the streets and neighborhoods of towns and cities all across America. For many, planning ahead for the holiday Christmas lights display is a yearlong event, often going to the extreme. While there are many famous moments in television and movies that highlight the use of Christmas lights, none are as famous as Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation as he plans and executes his Christmas lights decorations in his front yard. The name "Griswold", the characters last name, is now a common slang term to use when referring to someone that uses Christmas lights to excess when decorating for the holidays.

Planning Your Holiday Christmas Lights Display

Planning the use of holiday lights is often a very personal expression of the season. There are many people that cover every single space available on their lawns, rooftop and house. It is even possible to hire a company to deliver and setup designer Christmas lights designed to make your house glow within the darkness, like a beacon for lost ships. In many neighborhoods, neighbors and strangers alike often visit these homes, becoming a sort of icon during the holiday season.

For some, the use of Christmas lights is intended as a way to brighten the season and make their home appear to be cozy and welcoming to guests and strangers alike. Some enjoy the use of the popular icicle holiday lights, which are meant to give the impression of icicles hanging down from the gutters of a home. The soft gentle glow of these white lights is subtle and yet welcoming to passers-by.

A Small Town Christmas Light Display Becomes A Holiday Tradition

In a small town in Washington State, a man was famous within his local area for the Christmas light display that he would put on each year. People from surrounding cities and towns would drive to his neighborhood just to see his Christmas light display. One couple, which grew up in the neighborhood actually held a small private wedding ceremony in his driveway. After many years of popularity and small town fame, this man died in the months preceding the Christmas holiday; that year his family placed a large angel in the front yard with a sign telling all the people who came to see his display that he had passed away and his light display would no longer be seen during the holidays. For many, this was a significant loss in their holiday traditions.
